These are a small part of the tracks where I discovered the cougar had been following me. This trail is the one that went into the woods from the road and behind the outdoor hole in the ground we called the privy, about 15 to 20 yards behind it. This picture was taken the day before my little encounter whilst "on the privy"...
Note the distinctive tail-drag marks in the snow which made it easy to tell the difference between the cougar and bear tracks...

Other things of note are the following. One, this cat singled me out of a group of 16 total hunters. I walk slowly using a cane and limp. My walk is very unsteady. The other is that the cat mirrored my movements EXACTLY for at least two days. As far as identification of the tracks, the tail drag mark is one, and another is were the cat is bounding along, landing with all four feet close together... These individual marks in the snow were in some cases 15 feet apart which would clearly distinguish them from black bear tracks...
